Turkish police have arrested 46 people in connection with an explosion in central Istanbul that killed at least six people and injured 81 others, according to Istanbul police.
Suleyman Soylu, Turkey’s interior minister, told reporters on Monday that the suspects included the “person who left the bomb that caused the explosion” on Istanbul’s busy Istiklal Avenue. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described the explosion as “treacherous” and said it “smells like terrorism.”
Later that day, Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag told A Haber television that a woman had been sitting on one of the benches on Istiklal Avenue for more than 40 minutes.
He claimed that the explosion happened just minutes after she awoke.
“There are two options,” he told A Haber. “Either there’s a mechanism in this bag that explodes, or someone remotely explodes [it].”
